Juanma Trueba was born in Madrid, and has a degree in journalism and a PhD in literature. He was an intern at the Spanish news agency Agencia Efe and in 1993 he joined the newspaper Diario AS, where he remained until 2016, working his way from the bottom to become deputy director. During his time at the paper he reported on cycling, Real Madrid and the Spanish national football team. During that time he learnt how hard it is to cycle against the wind when you’re outside the peloton.
