At sixteen years of age, Miguel Hurtado signed up for a scout group going to Monserrat after a friend of his mother’s recommended it. Miguel, who had just begun to accept his homosexuality and who was struggling day after day with the difficulties of his dysfunctional family, got support in those difficult moments from Brother Andreu, a sixty-year-old friar who had founded the scouts group—a man beloved and respected in the community. Thinking he was safe in Monserrat, Miguel confessed his sexual identity to the monk, who, purporting to help “cure him,” abused him sexually.
This book will tell the true story of Hurtado, his family, and his path to survival as a victim of sexual abuse in a society in which the Catholic Church still wields a great deal of power. More importantly, Miguel tells how, as an adult, he has become one of the most noteworthy activists in the struggle against abuse in the Catholic Church, someone who continues to hope for a society that will definitively do away with the “manual of silence” that has long served to cover child sexual abuse.
